A Literature Survey on Fitts’ Law and its Applications

چکیده
The way of pointing a target object and the movement time of the pointer lead to a challanging problem in HCI. A large number of seminal paper have been proposed towards this. Moreover, the HCI community uses few formulas, and are related to Fitts’ law. Few are derived from Shannon’s information theory. This paper introduces a survey on Fitts’ law and its derivatives. Finally, we study the various application of Fitts’ law in HCI. Index Terms Fitts’ law, index of performance, index of difficulty

Information Theoretic Models of HCI: A Comparison of the Hick-Hyman Law and Fitts' Law
The Hick-Hyman Law and Fitts’ Law are two surviving human performance principles based on Shannon and Weaver’s (1949) Information Theory. In the early 1980s, Card, Moran, and Newell (1983) presented the laws as design principles for developers to maximize usability in the design of human–computer interfaces. A search of the current human–computer interaction (HCI) literature, however, will reve...

This paper addresses the problem of optimal placement and configuration for a set of buttons on a graphical user interface (GUI). We present an optimization algorithm that reduces the average time necessary for pointing device motions. Fitts’ law (Fitts 1954) is used to estimate the transfer time for cursor movements between buttons. Numerous studies in the literature focus on the verification ...
متن کاملExploring Fitts’ Law in Web Browsing
As one of the most influential laws in human-computer interaction for decades, Fitts’ law quantitatively models human pointing behaviors. However, the majority of Fitts’ law experiments have been conducted in a laboratory environment, which lends doubt to its validity in a real-world GUI (Graphical User Interface) context. This paper attempts to stresstest Fitts’ law in the “wild”, namely, unde...
متن کاملOn the Measurement of Movement Difficulty in the Standard Approach to Fitts' Law
Fitts' law is an empirical rule of thumb which predicts the time it takes people, under time pressure, to reach with some pointer a target of width W located at a distance D. It has been traditionally assumed that the predictor of movement time must be some mathematical transform of the quotient of D/W, called the index of difficulty (ID) of the movement task. We ask about the scale of measurem...
متن کاملInvestigation of Speed-Accuracy Tradeoffs in Speech Production Using Real-Time Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Motor actions in speech production are both rapid and highly dexterous, even though speed and accuracy are often thought to conflict. Fitts’ law has served as a rigorous formulation of the fundamental speed-accuracy tradeoff in other domains of human motor action, but has not been directly examined with respect to speech production. This paper examines Fitts’ law in speech articulation kinemati...
